'Luther' Creator Reveals Season Five Details And Future Movie Plans

'Luther' Creator Reveals Season Five Details And Future Movie Plans

For anyone moping about waiting for the return of Luther, the crime drama starring absolute badass Idris Elba, series creator and writer Neil Cross has a bit of good news - in fact, he's got a couple of nice little nuggets for you.

Speaking to Deadline, he revealed that production for the fifth series will begin in January 2018 (i.e. bloody soon, which is great), and he has written all of the episodes.

"I [have] delivered the final episode of Luther series five," Cross said."We're in prep right now and we're doing a bit of casting and we start shooting in January.

"For some reason, I always seem to shoot in the depths of winter."

And there's more: in the same interview Cross discussed the prospect of a Luther film. Turns out Cross is totally up for it, and that he's game whenever Idris Elba's hectic schedule allows it.

"The fact is that Idris and I are bound in this shared relationship with this character and every TV series, we think it's going to be the end," he said.

"Not least because Idris is a very busy and has a successful career, but we always miss him when it's over and then I start coming up with ideas. We always come back for more, for no other reason than we love doing it.

"Hopefully in some incarnation, the character will continue."

Non-committal, but optimistic. We like it.

He continued, saying that a film will always be at least slightly different from the TV series because of 'how long you have to tell a story'.

"Ultimately, whatever Luther story you tell, in whatever medium, has to focus on that character so in some ways it will be exactly the same because it will be about him," said Cross.

Cross is also behind a six-part 'pre-apocalyptic' crime drama starring Agyness Deyn as Detective Inspector Elaine Renko and Jim Sturgess as Detective Chief Inspector Charlie Hicks.

"We set out to make a show that's not really like any other show and I think we've succeeded. We had a blast making it," he said.

Hard Sun will be launching on BBC One in the new year - so while you might be left waiting a fair while for a Luther film, at least you've got something to tide you over until Idris has a bit more time to make a movie for you.
