Almost 30 years since it was first released Home Alone is a staple of the festive period, just like the traditional turkey and the Queen's speech, it's not Christmas until you have sat down and watched Kevin McCallister relentlessly beat the shit out of two hapless thieves who try and break into his parents' home.

You know, the mum and dad who forgot to take him with them on their - pretty extravagant - family holiday to France.

It's a classic and it was the film that rightly shot its child star, Macauley Culkin, to fame.

And though he's now 38-years-old the actor can't escape his most famous part.

Last month he even admitted in an interview that his cycle of fame is seasonal and every Christmas he notices that he gets recognised a lot more than other times in the year.

He even reprised the role of Kevin as he donned the red pyjamas for a Google advert.

Extremely active on social media, Culkin took to Twitter today and joked about his breakthrough role, apologising for making life that little bit harder for burglars targeting houses during the Yuletide.

He wrote: "I feel bad about all the burglars who never had the confidence to rob a house on Christmas thanks to me."

And the cheeky tweet has unsurprisingly struck a chord with fans of the 90s classic, with thousands of people commenting and sharing the post.

One person wrote: "After seeing Home Alone, my oldest son booby trapped our house. I stepped on #Legos for a week. Ironically, we had an attempted garage break-in that week but nothing stolen. @JasonBoydWrites still credits the booby traps he set earlier that day. "

Another added: "On the flipside though. You have probably made homeowners feel a lot safer at this time of year."

A third then said: "That's ok. Children should know guerilla warfare."

Another fan took the opportunity to ask the actor a question that has been on the lips of fans since it was released.

They wrote: "What we really need to know is what your dad in the movie did for a living though! flying the whole family on vacations ain't cheap there's some pretty funny theories out there."

What did he do?
