Man On ‘First Dates’ Digs Himself A Hole After Commenting On Woman’s Weight

He went for the ULTIMATE dating no-no

There are LOADS of things we know we shouldn't talk about on a first date - politics, money, past relationships, your burning desire to get married and have a million babies as soon as possible... you know the drill.

But one man on Channel 4 dating show First Dates thought he'd just go for it and make the ultimate dating faux pas, throwing the rule book out of the window by going straight in on a woman's weight. Yeeeeeeeeesh.

Othello (I know, what a name) arrived at the First Dates Hotel in Italy, and was given a date with 26-year-old Juliette (you know, just to continue the Shakespearean theme).

They chatted about his hair loss, with Juliette admitting she didn't normally go for bald guys, before moving on to the fact that Othello doesn't tend to put weight on - the lucky guy.

Juliette admitted she was the same until about six months ago.

"What, did your metabolism just go 'See ya later'?" Othello asked her.

"I'm not a fan of skinny girls, I like girls with... well I don't want to say meat like you're fat - you are not.

"Most men don't like that skinny look, you know... "Look, I think you look good. Let me rephrase that, I think you look amazing."

For. The. Love. Of. God. Please. Stop. Talking.

Juliette shot him an unimpressed look before popping off to the loo, which was when viewers began taking to social media to blast Othello's choice of conversation.

One person wrote: "I know what he was trying to say but he basically called her fat then."

Another said: "Maybe the dude should have talked less than that. Why he is asking if she likes hairor no hair, then why he gets mad when she gives an answer? She should have lied or what? And he also started the conversation about weight. You may think it is a compliment but she may get it as an insult. So why do you even talk about these?"

Someone else added: "By the way, I would've walked out on 'Othello' by now!! @FirstDates #firstdateshotel While I'm at it, having had friends tell me many times in my life that a man doesn't like me because I'm too skinny (Mostly in my much younger years!) - it's not cool."

Others, meanwhile, said that Juliette's offended reaction was a bit of a double standard, given her comments about bald-headed blokes earlier in the evening.

One said: "Sooo okay for them to joke about his baldness but not about her weight?"

Another wrote: "So they can make fun of his baldness, but he can't even say "I don't like skinny girls" without her being triggered. And he's the one digging himself into a hole? Maybe women these days are just a bit... entitled."

A third added: "So it's ok to mock someone about baldness, something out of their control, yet you can't mock a woman about her weight... right."

Some other viewers pointed out that the nature of these shows means that reactions are often edited for entertainment, with one saying: "He didn't really do anything wrong. The editing in this show is so misleading."

Either way, if I were Othello, I'd stay well clear of that line of conversation topic next time...
