Married At First Sight viewers were left furious over comments made by one of the newlywed's parents during last night's episode.

Wednesday evening's episode saw IT consultant Jack and Verity tie the knot - but not without the groom's father giving his thoughts.

While Jack's mum Carol was all for him marrying a total stranger, his dad Mark struggled to come to terms with the idea, telling him: "You need to get your head looked at. I'm going to send you to somebody, what if it goes wrong?"

Fast forward to the nuptials, and Mark sparked a backlash among fans of the show after commenting on his son's new wife's looks, adding that he didn't believe the marriage would last.

Before he'd met Verity, Mark told the cameras: "I hope she is quite slim, athletic, well-spoken... Hopefully a fun-loving girl."

But it seems like he was unimpressed by his son's match, snapping that the marriage won't last as he 'knows his son'.

Speaking to his wife, Mark said: "He never listens to me..." with Carol hitting back: "Not everything is based on looks, I married you."

Mark later told the camera: "What Jack normally goes for, it's very, very different. It's different to what I am used to for my son."

Viewers flocked to Twitter furious over Mark's comments about Verity.

"Why the fuck does it matter to Jack's dad what his daughter in law looks like? FFS," fumed one person.

While somebody else vented: "The dad wants 'slim, athletic and well spoken' for his son's wife... what a priority list! Not loving? Caring? Committed? Anything to do with having the best kind of relationship for his son? No? Ok."

"Fuck off Jack's dad. Prick of the year right there," tweeted a third.

Well, dinner with the in-laws is destined to be a pretty awkward occasion, isn't it?

Married At First Sight continues on Wednesday on Channel 4 at 9pm.
