Marvel Bosses Address Rumours The Punisher Will Be Cancelled After Season 2

There could be good news for Marvel fans as one of the team behind the Netflix series The Punisher has addressed rumours the show could be cancelled.

Netflix aired the second season of the show at the start of 2019, but rumours that it could be the last one started circling, especially after it was confirmed that Marvel's flagship series Daredevil would not be returning for a fourth season.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb and Steve Lightfoot, a showrunner for The Punisher, said they've left the coast clear for a third outing to follow the season two finale.

Leob said: "We have a whole story in mind that would be awesome, but again, the guns are locked and loaded, but Netflix has the finger on the trigger."

Lightfoot added: "We were finished before any of this started happening. I left [season two] on that final shot that was just meant to [make people go], 'Wow, I can't wait to see season three.'

"That was it. That was what I want them to take away, and it's like any show - if you've been in this business long enough, we've all worked on shows that got cancelled that you wish hadn't.

"I just hope we made a great show. My philosophy is always make every season like it could be your last. Don't save anything for next season, even if that means you've painted yourself into a corner. But make every season the best it can be, and hopefully it speaks for itself."

In the interview, Lightfoot also confirmed they wanted to see the show return for a third season, but the decision is ultimately down to Netflix.

He said: "We would love that, and nothing would make us happier than to work with those talented writers and crew. As I have repeatedly said, it is not our decision. We are ready to go and would love to do so. It is Netflix's call to make."

However, Leob wasn't willing to explore rumours that had been swirling around following the cancellation of Daredevil.

"I'd rather not get into the specifics, other than we were and continue to be extremely disappointed by the decision that the network made. But when you're in the game, that's all you can do," he added.

"Everyone has a favourite television show that has been cancelled on every single network, and we just happen to be at that place right now."

The fate of The Punisher still seems to be up in the air, but with plenty of people still firmly behind it, who knows it could still happen? Netflix, it's all down to you now.
