Mel Gibson And Danny Glover Are 'Trying To Get Lethal Weapon 5 Going'

Apparently they’re not too old for this sh*t...

It's nearly 20 years since we last saw LAPD Sergeants Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover); they were in a hospital after the birth of two babies and everyone was happy.

It seemed like a nice conclusion to a film series that spanned four mega blockbusters. However, it seems film studio executives reckon the dead horse that is the Lethal Weapon franchise deserves to be whipped once more.

According to Deadline, Gibson, Glover and director Richard Donner are in talks to get a fifth instalment to the legendary series that spawned the catchphrase: "I'm too old for this shit."

You'd think that the original cast would be well and truly too old for this shit but if the entertainment website is correct, it appears that age is just a number. The cast recently reunited and spoke very favourably about their time on set together.

Deadline says: "In the scenario we've heard, Donner would direct and Channing Gibson (Lethal Weapon 4) would script.

"There are many moving parts, but we've heard that all are on board and exploring another film. It would move forward, of course, at Warner Bros., the studio that has brought audiences four in the franchise."

Considering Lethal Weapon 4 left with two newborns, I sincerely hope they don't go down the path of Die Hard or Indiana Jones and introduce a daddy-daughter/daddy-granddaughter action film. Fans of the franchise appear to be excited at the prospect, but they have their concerns.

One person demanded that Mel Gibson reprise the mullet that he donned in the first film, while another fan mocked the idea, saying: "Can't wait for the mobility scooter chase and the Viagra gags."

Considering that Lethal Weapon 4 wasn't received well by critics, it's certainly risky to revive a series that ended in 1998. It has a 52 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus saying: "Jet Li's arrival breathes fresh life into a tired franchise formula - but not enough to put Lethal Weapon 4 on equal footing with its predecessors."

Surely a reboot would be able to improve all the epic explosions and stunts seen in the first four movies, but Mel Gibson is 61 and his co-star Danny Glover is 71; so, it would be interesting to see how the actors would cope.

None of the major actors have responded to the rumours about a fifth movie, so we'll have to wait and see whether any other teasers are released.
