This year has a lot to live up to, horror movie-wise, if it's to get anywhere near matching 2017. But with promising titles like Hereditary and Annihilation on the cards for release, things already seem to be off to a promising start.

Add to that a new Purge movie and it's shaping up to be a real winner.

Last year's gripping Get Out proved that horror as a genre is still as woke as it ever was, but the Purge franchise has always taken a few shots of its own at current socio-political affairs.

And judging by the poster for 2018's The First Purge, this time is no different.

The First Purge has just been officially unveiled for release on 4 July and a new poster featuring a familiar looking red baseball cap suggests in no uncertain terms that a certain billionaire president is the target for some trolling.

The new movie will be a prequel, exploring the events that led up to the previous instalments.

The official synopsis says: "Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country's 12 hours of annual lawlessness.

Blumhouse

"Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.

"To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalised, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation."

Sounds pretty gripping, right?

But it's not the first time the Purge movies have taken aim at Trump. The 2016 entry in the series, The Purge: Election Year, featured a play on Trump's famous campaign slogan with its 'Keep America Great' tagline.

Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee Gerard McMurray will be directing the new movie, following his first big-screen directorial debut, Burning Sands, last year.

Creator James DeMonaco remains on the movie (which was formerly called 'The Island') as screenwriter and producer.

Frank Grillo won't be coming back to reprise his role as Sergeant Leo Barnes, but Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, Insecure's Y'lan Noel, and Longmire's Patch Darragh will all be starring in the July movie.

The Purge (2013), The Purge: Anarchy (2014), and The Purge: Election Year (2016) amassed over $319M at the worldwide box office, which is rather impressive given the small budgets and some pretty shocking reviews.

The First Purge hits screens this summer on 4 July.
