Sam Elliot Jokes ‘It’s About F***ing Time’ For Oscar Nomination

“I think the thing off the top of my head might be, ‘It’s about f*cking time’,” he joked to Deadline.

The Oscar noms are in, and while many of those shortlisted don't come as much of a surprise (Rami Malek, Christian Bale, Olivia Coleman, Lady Gaga are all up for Best Actor gongs, to name just a few), there are some underdogs in there - like Sam Elliott, who's got his first ever Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in A Star is Born.

Elliot stars in the film - which is also up for Best Picture - as Bobby Maine, a straight-talking road manager who is one of the few supportive influences for Bradley Cooper's Jackson.

But while he's grateful for the recognition from the Academy, there was one overriding reaction to the news.

"I think the thing off the top of my head might be, 'It's about f*cking time'," he joked to Deadline.

"Beyond that, it's really about the work; it's just about the creative process. It's great to be recognized for that, that's really all it's about."

He continued: "I think my biggest takeaway is just how fortunate I am. Number one, to still be in the game, but to have an opportunity to work with two people like Bradley and Stefani (Lady Gaga), it's just extraordinary. Fifty years into the game and all of a sudden to have anything to do with this, to be connected with a film like this, it's just a wonderful gift."

Elliot also praised cinematographer and fellow nominee Matthew Libatque for the success of the film, adding: "I'm so grateful to be a part of it. It's meant everything to me. It's been some sort of a gift in my world on a personal level."

Melissa McCarthy, who is known for her work in comedy flicks, is also up for the Leading Actress Oscar for her turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me, while Richard E Grant received his first Oscar nomination for his supporting role in the same film.

Marvel's also had a bit of a turn out for the books - with Black Panther not only up for the highly coveted Best Picture award, but also a further six others.
