It seems like we've been waiting for news on Expendables 4 for ages now, with Sylvester Stallone dropping teasers here and there for a while. But we now have solid evidence that the film is in the making, and it came directly from Sly's Instagram.
Just as we were all starting to doubt it would ever see the light of day, the actor, producer and director has said he is taking inspiration from no other than Independence Day fireworks.

In the post, he put a photo of himself, with the caption: "All of those July 4th Fireworks got my mind going! I am starting to cook up The next adventure!"
A few months back, Sly got us all excited when he posted an Expendables 2 photo, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.
He called them "the three wiseguys ... the last of the breed!"
It looked like it was a teaser for Expendables 4, which was said to be in the works again.

Stallone directed and co-wrote The Expendables, which started the franchise in 2010. He co-wrote the script for The Expendables 2, which came out in 2012, as well as the one for The Expendables 3, which was released in 2014.
You would have then expected the fourth one to come out in 2016, but nothing of the sort happened.
In 2016, it was announced The Expendables 4 was going to bring back some original stars as the final film of the franchise.
Sly then walked away from the franchise, reportedly after creative disagreements with the studio, and being the good pal that he is, Arnie refused to return to the franchise without Sly, saying the he loved the first two, but was less than pleased with his story in the third.

Fast-forward to 2018, and Stallone and The Expendables 4 were back on track.
Things must have got a bit delayed somewhere down the line, with one report had Rambo 5 and The Expendables 4 opening in September 2018 and 'early' 2019, respectively.
So maybe we need to just push everything back a year, since Rambo V: Last Blood is now opening in September 2019.
According to reports, production for Expendables 4 began in April of this year. Hopefully we will have more news off Sly soon.
