It's been two years since the last film in the Bourne franchise and with no plans for a new instalment anytime soon, it has been beginning to look like fans could be waiting some time for their next dose of hard-hitting spy action.

However, word has it that the world of Jason Bourne could be set to infiltrate smaller screens as a US cable network gears up to introduce a TV spin-off series, based on the films.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, USA Network has ordered a pilot of a show called Treadstone.

Fans of the Bourne films will recognise that name from the covert operation from the movies that used a behaviour modification protocol to turn agents into superhuman assassins.

Bourne himself (Matt Damon) isn't confirmed to appear in the series (nor Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross from The Bourne Legacy) and instead the show will focus on other Treadstone sleeper agents as they're awakened to carry out their missions.

Created by Heroes man Tim Kring, Treadstone will also look at the origins of the team but still needs to make it past the pilot episode if it's ever to become a real show.

As of yet, there's no news in terms of casting but award-winning director Ramin Bahrani is set to direct the pilot.

Damon has previously said that it's unlikely he'll get another outing as Bourne, so fans better keep their fingers crossed that the pilot is a success if they want any more action.

"It would have to be a pretty incredible story to get us all back on the horse," Damon explained to the Toronto Sun. "This last one didn't do as well as the one we did 10 years ago, so maybe people are done with the character."

However, he didn't rule it out completely.

"Look, we all love working together and those movies are a lot of fun to make, so we sure would be happy to do it. If we can figure out a good story," he said.

Producer Frank Marshall also said that there was a possibility that the character could return in the future.

"Right now we're taking a pause and then we're going to dive back in and try to find a story," he told Yahoo Movies UK.

"We did leave it wide open at the end of the movie to continue on in Bourne's world so we'll see what we can come up with."
