Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! is one of the most beloved holiday stories all time, already portrayed in cartoon and musical forms, not to mention the feature film starring none other than comedy legend Jim Carrey.

Now Illumination and Universal have revived the grouchy Grinch, releasing the first official trailer for their new 3D animated version of the classic tale which will come out this winter.

CHECK OUT THE TRAILER FOR THE GRINCH:

In case you've never come across any of the above before, Dr. Seuss' tale tells the story of the grumpy Grinch who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a little girl's holiday spirit. It's the perfect heartwarming Christmas story.

This version of the story will feature Sherlock and The Imitation Game star Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, whose posh English voice is perfectly suited to the curmudgeonly Grinch.

Universal Pictures

According to the press release, this Grinch lives a lonely life in a cave on Mt. Crumpet with his long-suffering dog, Max, only being seen by the citizens of nearby Whoville (appropriately known as 'The Whos') when he needs to buy food.

The Whos annually disturb the Grinch with their noisy Christmas celebrations, and when they announce that they're going to make Christmas even bigger this year, he resolves to steal Christmas from them for good. What a Scrooge.

To do that, the Grinch decides to pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, but down in Whoville little Cindy Lou Who - a young girl full of Christmas cheer - has other plans to trap Santa so she can ask him to help her overworked single mum. What could possibly go wrong?!

As Christmas approaches, Cindy-Lou's good-natured plans come increasingly into conflict with the Grinch's more nefarious plot. Will Cindy-Lou get to meet the real Santa, or will the Grinch succeed in silencing Christmas? If you've never seen the story, I bet you can't wait to find out.

This isn't the first that we've seen of this new version of the Grinch - there was a balloon of the new Grinch (accompanied by Max, of course) in New York's Macy's Day Parade last year.

However, it has taken longer than expected for the film to come out - the film was meant to come out last year but was pushed back.

The Grinch will finally be released just in time for Christmas this year, coming out on 9 November 2018. We can't wait for it.
