Matthew McConaughey Plays Stoner Who Hangs With Snoop Dogg In Hilarious 'The Beach Bum' Trailer

The trailer makes the film look as bonkers as we were hoping it would be.

The first trailer for new movie The Beach Bum - starring Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg and Zac Efron - has finally dropped, and it looks like the quirky, stonery film we all thought it would be.

The teaser features McConaughey in the titular role of 'Moondog' - the Beach Bum himself - who IMDB describes as a 'rebellious stoner' who 'lives life by his own rules'.

He's long-haired and bearded. The very first scene shows him wearing visor shades and a psychedelic shirt while asking a shopkeeper for acid. I imagine that's a pretty good indication of what the rest of the film might be like.

The trailer also includes snakes, ginormous joints, fireworks, luxury yachts and sports cars.

The latter of those might tell us more about Snoop Dogg's character, who we only know by the name 'Lingerie'.

As the exotic but very weird name might suggest, Snoop's character appears to have a penchant for the life of luxury, at least that's the impression we get from his few seconds on camera in this trailer, anyway.

Alongside McConaughey and Snoop are Isla Fisher, Jonah Hill and Zac Efron, who is sporting a beard in the film - fans have said this makes him look like everything from a drug dealer to a panini after he posted an image of the new look earlier this year.

NEON/The Beach Bum

'The Beach Bum' is the work of Harmony Korine, the man who wrote and directed the 2012 film Spring Breakers, a critically acclaimed flick about four college girls who descend into a world of violence and crime inhabited by an eccentric drug dealer.

And his latest hit looks like it might follow the same pattern of being pretty bonkers but with a deeper message hidden in there somewhere or woven in throughout - the trailer shows us clearly strong characters but also gives us hints of strained and complex relationships between them.

McConaughey's character Moondog's role as a 'poet', which is also mentioned early on in the trailer, might provide a jumping-off point for his own narrative in the film - who knows?

In any case, the trailer paints a picture of a pretty nuts movie that may or may not carry the artistic calibre of Korine's previous works - either way, it certainly doesn't look boring.

The Beach Bum is due for release on 22 March 2019.
