The US Version Of 'The Office' May Be Making A Revival

The US Version Of 'The Office' May Be Making A Revival

Brits may argue that Ricky Gervais' version of The Office is still the definitive one, but the American adaptation of the dry-as-dust workplace comedy stuck around for much longer.

The staff of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton, PA office were last seen on US telly screens in 2013, but lovers of the show will be delighted to hear that NBC is planning to revive The Office in 2018-19.

According to TV Line, the revival won't see the return of Steve Carell, who played regional manager Michael Scott for seven seasons. However, sources 'close to NBC' have confirmed that the show will feature 'a mix of old and new cast members', including a new regional manager to replace Carell.

NBC president Bob Greenblatt has already confirmed his interest in reviving the show, highlighting his chats with Greg Daniels, the original developer of the US series.

"We often talk about The Office," the TV boss told TVline's sister site Deadline last summer. "I've talked to Greg [Daniels] four times over the past few years. It's always, 'Maybe someday, but not now.'"

"There is certainly an open invitation, but we don't have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I would do it."

It's clear why TV execs are interested in reviving the show as Will and Grace has made a highly successful comeback against the odds.

The revival of Will and Grace hasn't only been commercially successful for NBC as longtime fans of the show quickly flooded back, but it has also garnered a lot of critical acclaim.

Last week, the revived sitcom even landed itself multiple Golden Globe nominations, including for Best Comedy Series, so it does prove that an old comedy can still be a good one.

Rumours are also swirling around that 30 Rock is the next show that NBC will look to bring back, if The Office proves to be just as successful.

NBC has declined to officially confirm or comment on the news that The Office will be returning, but it's enough for fans of the show to get their hopes up.

It also raises a few questions: which members of the original ensemble cast will be returning for the revival and who else apart from Carell won't?

Dwight Schrute owns the Scranton branch building now, so he and Angela seem like dead certs, right? Of course, there's no way of knowing until it happens. Either way, I hope a return to Chili's isn't too far away.
