This year's set of contestants on The X Factor are all hoping to make their dreams come true, but one of them sounds like he is glad just to be competing at all.

Loyd Macey is just one step away from the talent show's grand final - a fantastic change of fate after fearing he had cancer four years ago.

The 23-year-old Welshman was even worried that he might be dying as he admitted to losing seven stone in a month and a half while studying at university.

"I was terrified that I had cancer," revealed Lloyd, who has made it to the semi-finals of this year's competition. "I was at uni and my flatmates and I got food poisoning . But while they got better I just got worse and worse.

"There was so much pain and bloating in my stomach I could barely move or eat and I couldn't go to the loo. I went from 19 to 12 stone in just six weeks. The change was so drastic people didn't recognise me.

"I went into hospital for tests. My parents were doing their best to make it seem less serious. But I knew what was going through my Mam and Dad's' minds - and my Nan's too."

Lloyd said that his family and friends were all filled with concern because his symptoms were worryingly similar to those commonly associated with bowel cancer.

Luckily, he found out that his symptoms were not of cancer, but of Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel condition.

While he had to get to grips with what living with Crohn's would mean, things have changed drastically for Lloyd over the past four years.

The Welsh rugby-playing LAD is one of the favourites to take the X Factor crown and could be living the dream in just a week's time.

"After I was diagnosed, my diet changed, I got healthier, got more energy, took the medication and was able to breathe better," Lloyd said.

"And working with Louis and the voice coach is helping me breath even deeper and working my stomach is helping my Crohn's. I'm in the perfect career for someone with my condition."

Fresh from performing with former X Factor winners Little Mix after winning the show's new Prize Fight, Lloyd is currently competing with Rak-Su, The Cultkevins, Grace Davies, Kevin and Matt Linnen in the two-day semi-final.

Tonight he sang Elton John 's Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me and successfully avoided elimination, with poor Matt Linnen getting the axe instead.

If he can survive Sunday night's bout, Lloyd'll be just one step from stardom - a great thought when he may not have been here to sing at all.
