The 89th Annual Academy Awards are taking place tonight and a number of stars have been spotted wearing blue ribbons.

Award ceremonies, particularly the Oscars, has been a way for celebrities to share their political messages for years now - remember Leo taking the chance to talk about climate change when he won his Best Actor award last year?

Well, this year, people don't even need to bother opening their mouth to share their message, because they've been wearing them pinned to their chest.

Stars including Ruth Negga chose to wear the blue ribbons tonight; Casey Affleck was also spotted wearing one at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. The blue ribbons have ACLU printed on them, which stands for the American Civil Liberties Union and are part of a new initiative called 'Stand with ACLU'.

The campaign launched last week and aimed to encourage a number of Hollywood stars to wear the ribbons to show their solidarity to the ACLU, which has fought for the civil rights of citizens for over 100 years.

The organisation has gained notoriety lately for its work on helping those it believes are being unfairly treated under Donald Trump's presidency.

Ruth has an additional reason to back the ACLU, because the non-profit organisation also provided the legal resources for her film Loving, which tells the story of an inter-racial couple in 1958.
