Winston Duke Set To Star As Kimbo Slice In Upcoming Biopic

Winston Duke is pretty new to this acting lark.

He's only appeared in two films in his short career, having only begun acting on the screen just over four years ago.

That considered, it's hard to think of an actor who has had such a huge impact over the course of just two films, with Duke delivering standout performances as M'Baku in both Black Panther and later Avengers: Infinity War.

Duke made waves not only for his acting chops, but also for his, well, chops.

His fight scenes in Black Panther were nominated for Fight of the Year at the MTV Movie Awards and, if Hollywood reports are to be believed, there might be a whole film's worth of fighting to come from Duke.

He's slated to play legendary MMA star Kimbo Slice in a movie of his life, with White Boy Rick writer Andy Weiss responsible for bringing the iconic backyard brawler turned Octagon star to the big screen.

"It's a rich and layered tale about this man's incredible journey from a poor neighborhood in Miami to becoming a worldwide phenomenon," said Weiss to Deadline.

"We are ecstatic that Winston has decided to take on this both physically and emotionally challenging role. We simply could not find a better Kimbo.

"I'm looking forward to exploring Kimbo's story and interrogating the expectations society places on men like him who are their own special breed of hero."

It was Deadline that first broke the story that there was a Kimbo Slice movie in the works last year.

When they announced the news in October, Simon Brand - director of the likes of Paradiso Travel and Unknown - explained why Slice was such a compelling subject for a movie.

"Those who only knew Kimbo by viewing his brawls saw him as fierce and frightening beast of a man, but those close to him experienced his heart of gold, and that he used his fists and instruments to raise his family out of poverty, he was a loyal friend and devoted father," he said.

"Kimbo's story transcends the ring, it is a story about the power of the internet, the lengths one will go to break out of desperation and it is a success story shared with his longtime friend turned manager and adult entertainment magnate Michael Imber as they both emerge from the slums of Miami."

Slice came to prominence through backyard fighting and made his way up to the UFC and Bellator, the two biggest mixed martial arts promotions on the planet. He tragically died in June 2016 after suffering heart failure at the age of 42.
