Woman Behind Netflix's 'Unbelievable' Thanks Show For Providing Closure

Netflix's Unbelievable has received praise from viewers worldwide, including Marie herself, who the show is based on.

Netflix's new drama series Unbelievable is one of this year's must-watch shows, telling the true story of Marie, an 18-year-old who survived being raped in her home, only to then be charged for making a false claim after police and relatives cast doubt on her version of events.

Not only does it provide insight into the injustice of the US's judicial system, but it also serves as an important exploration on the topic of rape culture - and how the blame is often placed on the victim, rather than the perpetrator.

Unbelievable has received praise from viewers worldwide, including Marie herself. Kevin Armstrong - who co-wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning article which the Netflix series is based on - shared the survivor's real-life reaction to the show.

Armstrong wrote on Twitter: "Two weeks ago I got a call, from Marie. She told me she had just watched the series.

"Watching it was hard, she said. 'I did cry quite a bit', she said. But she had decided she wanted to and was glad that she did. She called the show 'excellent'."

In a series of follow-up tweets, Kevin went on to explain that Marie was grateful to Kaitlyn Dever, the actress who portrayed her in the show.

He continued: "I asked Marie if I could share her thoughts on Twitter. She said that would be fine. She brought up one scene in particular - in the first episode, in which she's confronted by police and recants.

"Marie has told me before that it can be a struggle for her to put her feelings and thoughts into words. In that scene, she said, Kaitlyn Dever captured her struggle. 'It was, like, perfect', she said.

"For Marie, watching the work of the detectives in Colorado, 1,300 miles from where she had been attacked, reinforced a sense she'd had since first she learned about them: 'I felt like they were my guardian angels, looking out for me'.

"And watching the last episode, watching the re-creation of the Colorado detectives closing in, provided Marie something she didn't expect. 'Seeing him get put away, that was closure for me', she said."

Marie praised Kaitlyn Dever's performance in the interrogation scene in particular.
Netflix

Just another piece of evidence to show the positive impact Unbelievable has had since it dropped on Netflix on 13 September.

A shoutout is also due to Toni Collette and Merritt Wever, who play Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall respectively - as Marie described the two detectives, the 'guardian angels' who brought justice to this harrowing case.
