Empty shelves, queues around the block, skyrocketing resale prices - these were the scenes in Australia when Cadbury relaunched Caramilk last year.

When Australia's favourite chocolate bar was brought back, people absolutely lost their minds. Australians essentially dropped everything and ran to buy the bars when they first went on sale, shops were having to limit the number of Caramilks each person could buy and they were being resold on eBay for way above the original price. It's fair to say that things got way out of hand.

Photos of fans proudly holding large stacks of Caramilks began to appear on social media as people compared their stash to a retirement fund or an investment in cryptocurrency. Chocolate as currency, we can get on board with that.

The Caramilk landed here in July, with a newly developed recipe especially for the UK. So, what is a Caramilk and what is it about it that has got Australians so obsessed?

Cadbury Caramilk is a golden blend of white chocolate, made using 100% sustainably sourced cocoa (delicious and sustainable - tick). It's creamy, it's smooth and this simple yet utterly delicious golden caramel chocolate sends people absolutely wild.

Cadbury Caramilk was first launched in 1968 in New Zealand and Australia before it was discontinued in 1994 - and it's been sorely missed. The chocolate bar has grown a strong following but it has never been widely available on British shelves ... until this year.

It's not often that a chocolate can reach the elite status held by the Caramilk, or turn what I assume are (usually) normal, level headed people into chocolate-crazed maniacs, but when some Australians were asked to share their love of Caramilk, they have gone as far as to say that they would give up their gran, their cat or even their financial stability to get their hands on Caramilk. Must be some pretty good chocolate.

And, many Brits have been getting aboard the Caramilk appreciation bandwagon, with users on Twitter asking 'Where has [Caramilk] been all my life?' and sharing their love for the bar, "Caramilk is a game changer, well played @CadburyUK".

So have you tried it yet? Cadbury Caramilk is now available to buy in supermarkets across the country so you might just want to think about investing in a few bars, you know, just in case those bitcoins don't work out for you.
