Mario Kart fans can rent specially customised go-karts in Japan to travel around major cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto in style.

There are various companies in the country that offer Nintendo-style go-kart experiences, which let people zip around the city while dressed as their favourite video game character.

According to Voyagin, a tours and activities online booking platform, a short course in Tokyo booked through its site costs from ยฃ47.11 ($66.88), with the price including go-kart rental for 45-60 minutes, a guide, face mask, shades, fuel and an optional costume.

You'll just need to bring a Japanese driver's license, Japanese SOFA license or an International Driving Permit to get involved.

Voyagin offers courses in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

The site says of a course on offer in Akihabara, Tokyo: "Rent go-karts and ride around Akihabara - cosplay as your favorite characters and blaze through the streets of Tokyo's gaming, anime, and manga mecca!"

There are also many glowing reviews from happy customers, with one writing: "This experience was more than worth the price of admission. Where else will you get to see the sites of a major city from the seat of a go-kart.

"My tour guide was amazing and took pictures all throughout the journey. I highly recommend the longer two hour trip as we got to see many more sites."

Another wrote: "What a blast! Highlight of our Japan trip and something we would do again and again!

"Our tour guide (optional; not required) was the most friendly person ever. He was always smiling and taking pictures of us to share afterwards."

Another website offering such experiences is Street Kart, which promises an 'extremely exciting and must-have experience' for tourists in Tokyo.

Street Kart says its custom-made go-karts are fully compliant with local governing laws in Japan, while safety regulations 'exceed' police requirements.

The website explains: "Just imagine yourself on a custom made go-kart specifically tailored to realize the Real Life SuperHero Go-Karting experience!

"Dress up in your favorite character costume, playing the music of your choice and driving through the city of Tokyo. All eyes on you guarantee!

"You can ride with a group or ride privately, Street Kart is fully equipped to make your experience a very important one."

Along with costumes to rent, customers can also record the experience on a 4K action camera, and the karts all come equipped with bluetooth speakers so you can whizz along to your favourite tunes.
