Is it really 21 years since GoldenEye 007 was released on the Nintendo 64? Readers of a certain age might now be reminiscing on coming home from school and whiling away the hours annihilating everyone in sight on the popular shoot-'em-up.
Otherwise, you might have played one of its spiritual successors like Rogue Agent or even the Windows conversion mod GoldenEye: Source. Either way, chances are you were hooked.
Well, heads up gamers and kids of the 90s - this is your chance to relive those moments. It turns out the team at GoldenZen are working on a remake of the beloved game and the preview is here.
It looks look they've not held anything back with the remake, either - in one of the early release videos of what they've named Golden Eye 25 (referencing the 25th anniversary of the game in 2022, when the game is expected to be ready), we get a really good look at the updated 'Facility Room' level - which should be extremely familiar to anyone who's played the game before.

It maintains the first-person retro shooter vibe we all know and love, however the graphics have been completely overhauled and modernised with the Unreal Engine 4.
Amazing as it looks, however (and it really does), your dreams of reliving the Nintendo experience could be short-lived - this is not an official Nintendo game, so if the gaming giant really wanted, it could stamp out the spark before it becomes a flame.
On the GoldenZen Youtube, the creators said: "The mission of GoldenEye 25 is to port and remaster GoldenEye 007 for the N64 to the Unreal Engine by GE64's 25th anniversary in August 2022!

"As for the soundtrack, I'm trying to do my best to continue where Eric Serra's epic material had ended. The GE25 soundtrack will not contain straight cover songs of the original N64 game but tracks more reminding of the actual movie score to make for an immersive single player movie experience."
It shouldn't come as a shock that anyone would want to remake GoldenEye 007 - besides being one of the best games ever it was also the third-best selling Nintendo 64 game ever, with eight million copies sold and a gross of $250 million worldwide.
GoldenEye was pretty special - partly because it was a great game all round, but also thanks to its split-screen 'death-match' multiplayer mode, which helped pave the way for games of today such as Halo.

Fingers crossed this will actually come to pass, but until then 90s kids can always dig out the N64, blow the dust from the cartridge and get back into the game.
In the meantime, maybe the much-rumoured N64 Classic will become a reality...
