'Spider-Man' Character Mary Jane Is Voiced By A Video Game Favourite
Spider-Man PS4 has got fans excited for a whole host of reasons; it is the most exciting Spidey video game since the movie tie-ins back in the early 2000s, with an incredible looking open world, amazing web-swinging physics and a sophisticated fight system - as well as a fully original story featuring some of the web-heads' biggest foes.
Well, now we know who will be playing Mary Jane Watson in this new take on the iconic Marvel hero.
The voice cast currently includes Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Stephen Oyoung as Mister Negative. Lowenthal has a strong history in animated voicing; he played the titular Ben in the smash hit kids show Ben 10, the Prince in the Prince of Persia series and several others, having lent his voice to Halo, Naruto, Final Fantasy and many more franchises over the past 20 years.
Now Laura Bailey has joined the cast, adding another reason to get excited about the September release. Bailey is a seasoned professional at video game voicing, having worked on some of the biggest AAA titles recently - you can hear her talents in Uncharted 4, Gears of War 4, Halo 5, Resident Evil 6 and more.
Creative Director of Insomniac Games, Bryan Intihar announced that MJ would be voiced by Bailey on Twitter, penning a sweet message where he called her 'one of the most talented people' he had ever worked with.
MJ has been played by a host of actresses over the years, most notably Kirsten Dunst in the Spider-Man movie trilogy, directed by Sam Rami, and most recently by Zendaya in the MCU's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Zendaya's portrayal of MJ was a late twist in 2017's Homecoming - throughout the film her character had been known as 'Michelle' - and producer Kevin Feige explained in an interview with IGN that the late reveal of her initials was more of an homage than a direct explanation.
While Spider-Man PS4 is not directly related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is set to feature a number of costumes inspired by the series.
Since his 2016 screen debut in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland's Peter Parker has gone through a number of different costumes. In addition to his standard web slinging attire, the player will be able to play in the homemade outfit from Homecoming, as well as Avengers: Infinity War's 'Iron Spider' costume, as well as a whole host of other outfits from across Spider-Man's half-century-spanning career in comics, films and cartoons.
Spider-Man is out 7 September on PS4.
