Games developer Bethesda has made an exciting announcement this week. The Maryland-based games company is highly regarded for the consistent quality of its output over the years, from fighting wizards and monsters in the vast Elder Scrolls world to pickpocketing mutants in Fallout or shooting Nazi men in the various Wolfenstein games.

Yup, the company's wares have given gamers the world over hours of spellbinding, lock-and-load-related joy in recent times, joy which is set to continue this year as the developer reveals plans to release a new game before the end of 2017.

Unsurprisingly, however, it didn't let on too many details, leaving gamers in a state of heightened anticipation as to what the release might constitute. Talking to tech, science and gaming content creators Tek Syndicate recently, Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines hinted at the company's plans.

While speaking about paid mods and other Bethesda-related news, Hines told the website: "We have a ton of stuff going on; and we even have a game coming out this year that we haven't even told anybody about yet. They can wait. It won't be so long."

The marketing man wouldn't provide much info about whether the new project was an original game, sequel or update to an existing franchise, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further news.

It's unlikely Bethesda's latest will be the sixth instalment of the Elder Scrolls series, as it's developers continue to tinker and experiment with it to make it as good as can possibly be.

Bethesda is already set to release Dishonored 2: Death of the Outsider, The Evil Within 2 and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus before the end of the year, but given the company's track record, whatever the newcomer ends up as will likely be a winning addition to Bethesda's roster.

Meanwhile, the company also has plans to bring the hugely successful Skyrim series to Nintendo Switch this year, which ought to see it populating stockings the world over around Christmas time.

Christmas 2017 looks set to be a competitive year within the games industry, with a plethora of releases between now and the Christmas period set to vie for children's love/parent's money, including PES 2018, Divinity: Original Sin 2, FIFA 18, Assassin's Creed Origins, Super Mario Odyssey, Call of Duty: WWII and Star Wars Battlefront II, among others.

Christ, you wouldn't want to be the parent of gaming-mad quintuplets this year, would you? Or ever for that matter.
