Few video game characters have had a journey as turbulent as The Blue Blurs has been. Over the past 25 years there have been good times and bad ones, and very bad ones.
As a general rule of thumb, Sonic works best when he sticks to the method that made him great in the first place - running from left to right at eye-watering speeds.

2011's Sonic Generations was a testament to that. Although it contained many 3D segments it was largely a side-scrolling affair played at about 200mph.
To celebrate 25 years of Sonic, Sega will now be offering a fully 2D adventure.
Sonic Mania was announced Friday evening at a special event during San Diego Comic-Con. The game goes back to Sonic the Hedgehog's roots again, only this time Sega's got some top-tier retro talent lending a helping hand.

It was made in collaboration with fan-game creator Christian Whitehead, retro specialists Headcannon and PagodaWest Games.
According to Sega, Sonic Mania is a reimagining of the original trilogy, featuring a mix of new levels and rebuilt classics.
Sonic Mania arrives for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC next year.
