Ahh, the mid-90s, when Nerds and Lucky Charms were widely available food and not hugely overpriced items in Selfridges. It was a great time to be a child.
Pokemon had also taken over the world, everyone had a Game Boy with either Pokemon Blue or Red, and if you didn't you'd probably kill another child to get your hands on it.
I can't ever remember seeing an advert promoting the game, it was just something you knew about. But if I had have seen this original Nintendo advert for the series, I'd have been severely traumatised. Kotaku have rediscovered the advert where Nintendo play on your attachment to the fictional animals by having a busload of them kidnapped and then presumably crushed to death.
I think the purpose here is to show the animals being compacted into the Game Boy like the pocket monsters they are but I guess the message got badly lost in translation somewhere.
