Idris Elba says Luther movie is finished and will open up a whole new world

DCI John Luther is nearly ready for his big screen debut

Idris Elba has shared some exciting new developments for the anticipated Luther film, saying it will 'open the doors' for the long-running crime thriller series.

Last November, fans of the BBC series, in which Elba stars as the impeccably talented DCI John Luther, were excited to hear that cameras had started rolling for the upcoming movie.

Although details of the plot have been kept firmly under wraps, we do know the 50-year-old actor will be joined by the likes of Genius star Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis of Lord of the Rings fame.

We also know that while Netflix's feature film will stay true to the five-season show on which it's based, it will also be a story in its own right.

Idris Elba said they've finished filming the Luther movie.

Elaborating on the project while promoting his recent blockbuster Beast, Elba told LADbible: "The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it's nearly there.

"We're really proud of it."

When asked if there are any unexpected returning characters, of course Idris wasn't allowed to say.

But he did share an exciting little tidbit, telling us: "The world of Luther as a television show and film is similar, but the film has [huge] scale.

"We're opening the doors and widening it so anything's possible when you can do that."

All aboard the hype train!

Although a release date is TBC, it sounds like we won't have to wait too long to find out when.

Considering the star had been donning the famous coat and chasing baddies for eight years, it's no surprise he's always been into the idea of seeing the series making its way to the big screen.

The fifth and final season was broadcast over four consecutive nights in 2019, and Elba explained why its format sets things up perfectly for a movie.

Fans can't wait for Luther's big screen debut.

In a previous sit down with LADbible, before the film project was underway, he explained: "For me it would be nice to take Luther up a scale. Make the storyline bigger, make it slightly more international."

When asked about how the show would handle telling a story in a 90-minute block rather than over several hour-long episodes, Elba said: "We've made varied seasons, one season was six episode, one was four - Luther's adaptable.

"I think if we can figure out the formula to keep an audience captivated for an hour and a half, on a movie, I think Luther has definitely got the attributes to make that happen."
