How Long Would It Take To Fall Through The Centre Of The Earth?

Minutes, days, months, years?

If you never tried to dig all the way to Australia in your front garden when you were a kid then what the hell were you doing with your young life? Playing games consoles? That's bad parenting.

Everyone knows children should be playing out unsupervised in the streets.

It's very unlikely you ever made it to Australia with a garden trowel, but hey, you probably went there on a gap year anyway, and checked in at Bondi Beach on Facebook.

But let's say you're sat at your desk, contemplating things that aren't work, thinking about how you miss your childhood, because you didn't have to pay council tax or pretend you hadn't received the umpteenth letter regarding a TV license.

Imagine if you did manage to dig all the way through the earth and then, as you stood, looking down in awe, admiring your work, you lost your balance and fell through.

Just how long would it take to fall the 7,900 miles (roughly)?

Years, months, weeks?

Well not even close.

It would take around the same time it takes you to watch an episode of Breaking Bad. LiveScience calculated it would take 42 minutes and 12 seconds. Obviously by the time you got there you'd be very on fire and your face will have been ripped from your skull but the experience will have been worth it.

According to HyperPhysics, you would hit a staggering 7,900 m/s or almost 17,700 miles/hr as you passed through the geometric centre. Realistically if this did ever happen (it never will so this is a moot point) the jumper would almost immediately smash against the front wall of the hole and destroy their entire body. So for this to work, the dropped object would have to bounce elastically off the front and rear walls.

So there you have it, if you're hopelessly flirting with an Australian girl who spends her entire life in a bikini, just think, in an ideal world you could get there in less than an hour. Life is cruel.
