However, it's a double-edged sword, and people can get pretty bent out of shape by what seems like a harmless slight on the internet.
Selena Gomez might be about to find out just how pissed off online actions can make people after unfollowing all but 37 of her followers on Instagram.
The 13 Reasons Why star is the most followed person on the photo-sharing site, but some pretty big names got the chop after she culled her Insta list.
Her on/off friend, Demi Lovato, didn't make the cut, giving rise to speculation of another fall out. Zayn Malik's girlfriend, Gigi Hadid, missed out, too. She even unfollowed her own assistant, Theresa Mingus. Harsh.

So who made it through? Well, Taylor Swift passed the test, as did Amy Schumer, and Jessica Alba. Her best friend, Francia Raisa is still there, but to be fair, she did donate a kidney to her, and if that's not worth a follow I don't know what is.
This news comes weeks after she unfollowed her own mother on Instagram amid rumours of a falling out. Her mum apparently disapproves of her reigniting her relationship with Justin Bieber.
The pair began texting again last year when Selena was hospitalised after her Lupus - a severe immune system disease - forced her to have a kidney transplant, which makes a disagreement over Instagram seem pretty stupid really.
It might all be a storm in a teacup anyway. She recently revealed that she barely has any control over her accounts and doesn't even know the password.
She leaves all of her social media up to her assistant, who presumably had the bizarre task of unfollowing herself.

She told Vogue: "As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out.
"It had become so consuming to me. It's what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn't want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn't want to care about.
"I always end up feeling like shit when I look at Instagram. Which is why I'm kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit."
