Aquaman 2 has started filming and the production launch has created renewed calls for Amber Heard to be dumped from the project.

Director James Wan said the cast and crew have started shooting their first scenes ahead of the film's release at the end of next year.

He posted a picture of what looked like an icy cave in what's the first insight into Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom.

However, the post on Instagram was quickly flooded with angry comments from fans demanding that Amber Heard, who plays Mera in the DC superhero flick, be replaced.

The hashtag #JusticeForDepp was trending on Twitter shortly after Wan's Instagram post and many people let their feelings be heard.

Heard's involvement in the film has previously come under scrutiny amid her ongoing legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp.

Many film fans called for her to be fired from the Aquaman sequel as a result, with a petition for her removal garnering more than 1.8 million signatures.

Last year, Depp lost a libel case against the Sun newspaper and executive editor Dan Wootton. The case centred on whether an article published in The Sun, in which Depp was called a 'wife beater', was libellous.

The newspaper claimed to have seen 'overwhelming evidence' that Depp had attacked the 34-year-old Heard, while Depp strenuously denies those allegations.

Both Depp and Heard gave evidence in the 16-day-long trial, which aired the tempestuous nature of their relationship, and stories of both brutal violence and intimate detail.

Following the trial, Depp was dumped from the third instalment of the Harry Potter spin-off film franchise Fantastic Beasts. He was also dropped for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean as the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow.

That understandably caused an almighty uproar from fans and many blamed Heard for the decision. They have been campaigning for Heard's removal from Aquaman while simultaneously trying to get Depp reinstated.

Depp was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen in the Fantastic Beasts movie and Disney ended up going with an all-female cast for the Pirates of the Caribbean film.
