Brendan Fraser has been recruited to star in the upcoming Batgirl film.

Deadline is reporting the legendary star is set to play supervillain Firefly for the Warner Bros. and DC Comics movie.

Firefly has been described as a 'sociopathic pyromaniac with an obsessive compulsion to start fires' and is also one of Batman's 'most recurring enemies'.

He starts out as Garfield Lynns in the DC Comics, who was a down-and-out film special effects expert. He cooks up a plan to rob a theatre, however this devious plot gets foiled by Batman and Robin.

The character was then reimagined to have a darker storyline that had elements of an abusive childhood and a life that succumbed to Gotham's poverty.

During one particularly bad incident at a chemical factory, he sustained burns to 90 per cent of his body. So, he recreated a fireproof supervillain suit that comes with some epic weapons.

Attached to his suit is a military-grade flamethrower, smoke bombs and grenades, a sword-like blade of superheated plasma and a high-tech, winged jet pack to help him fly.

To think that Brendan Fraser will embody all this and more is too good.

He will be starring in the movie, which is slated for next year, opposite Leslie Grace, who has been cast as the titular character Batgirl.

Batgirl is actually Barbara Gordon in the DC Comics universe, who is the daughter of Gotham Police Commissioner Jim Gordon.

J.K. Simmons has been again cast as Commissioner Gordon after first appearing in the role for Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life) have been brought on to direct the film and Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson is developing the script.

The movie is debut to drop on HBO Max sometime next year and no doubt everyone will be eager to see Fraser and Grace in their super suits.

The Batgirl film has been in development since at least 2017 when Joss Whedon was brought on to write, direct and produce the movie.

He eventually stepped down the following year, however work continued to hire their main actor as well as develop how her character was going to enter the DC Cinematic Universe.
