Britney Spears' lawyer has requested to have her father Jamie removed as the head of her conservatorship.

Jamie Spears has been in control of the pop star's life for the last 12 years and now she wants a change.

He has been able to dictate where Britney goes, what happens to her money, her music career, who she sees, and other facets of her life following her mental health breakdown in 2008.

Jamie became head of the conservatorship last year when the co-conservator stepped down. However, a temporary conservator was put in place in September 2019 when Britney's dad's health declined.

Court documents obtained by TMZ and US Weekly show Britney wants the conservatorship title to be transferred to her temporary care manager Jodi Montgomery. It adds that the 38-year-old is 'strongly opposed to having [Jamie] return as the conservator of her person'.

Britney also wants to have 'a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed to serve' as sole conservator of her estate like a bank.

While the conservatorship has been restrictive in terms of Britney's movements, she doesn't want it to end completely.

Britney's lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III said in the court documents: "Without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future, Britney would like Ms. Montgomery's appointment as conservator of her person to be made permanent."

Fans of Britney Spears have been worried their star has been kept against her will in the conservatorship and started a #FreeBritney movement on social media.

Britney tried to dissuade people from thinking she was in any form of imprisonment.

Her father also told Page Six that the #FreeBritney movement was stupid.

"All these conspiracy theorists don't know anything. The world don't have a clue. It's up to the court of California to decide what's best for my daughter. It's no one else's business," he said. "I have to report every nickel and dime spent to the court every year. How the hell would I steal something?"

"People are being stalked and targeted with death threats. It's horrible. We don't want those kinds of fans. I love my daughter. I love all my kids. But this is our business. It's private."

A court date about the future of the conservatorship will take place in a US court today (Wednesday, August 19).
