Demi Lovato has confirmed they are no longer living life as 'California sober'.

The term refers to how an individual commits to using marijuana instead of alcohol and other addictive substances.

The 'Heart Attack' singer chose the lifestyle following their drug overdose in 2018, however they have instead revealed they've now ditched that mentality.

Writing on an Instagram Story, Demi said: "I no longer support my 'California sober' ways. Sober sober is the only way to be."

On their latest album, Dancing With The Devil, the 29-year-old included a song called 'California Sober', which dived into how they approached it.

'Used to live in fear of always slipping/But living for perfection isn't living', was one lyric, while another stated, 'Trading judgment for freedom/Found somethin' new to believe in/Somethin' inside of me screaming/Don't be so hard on yourself'.

Demi released a documentary to accompany the new album and the singer opened up more about their drug overdose and how they were essentially left for dead.

After coming out a near-death experience, Lovato said they needed to find balance with taking mind altering substances.

Demi did some soul searching and realised that allowing themself to indulge in one vice meant they weren't tempted to escalate things.

"I've learned that shutting a door on things makes me want to open the door even more. I've learned that it doesn't work for me to say 'I'm never gonna do this again,'" they said in the documentary.

"Telling myself I can never have a drink or smoke marijuana is setting myself up for failure because I am such a black-and-white thinker.

"I had it drilled into my head for so many years that one drink was equivalent to a crack pipe."

Demi explained how they had systems in place that prevents them from relapsing into harder drugs.

While they copped some backlash from other celebrities, the singer said this is what worked for them and it wasn't meant to be a promotion of the lifestyle.

"I also don't want people to hear that and think they could just try having a drink or smoking a joint because it isn't for everyone," they said in the docuseries.

"Recovery isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. shouldn't be forced to get sober if you're not ready. You shouldn't get sober for other people. You have to do it for yourself."

However clearly something has changed to warrant them going to sober sober.
