Dog the Bounty Hunter has bizarrely claimed he thought he was allowed to use the N word.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the TV star said he has loads of Black friends who said it was okay for him to use the racial slur.

Dog, real name Duane Lee Chapman, was responding to claims levelled by his daughter Bonnie that he was racist and homophobic.

His TV show was cancelled by network A&E when a phone call between him and his son was leaked to the public.

During that call, Dog dropped the N word at least six times while talking about his son's girlfriend and it sparked a furious backlash against him from people all over the world.

However, the 68-year-old said he isn't racist just because he uses the incredibly offensive as he was given a free pass to use it.

"I have never been a racist. I'm 33.5 per cent Apache. But because of over 15 years ago, I have an Achilles' heel because I used the wrong word," he said.

When asked why he thought it was okay to use a word that has been problematic for decades, he said: "I thought I had a pass in the Black tribe to use it, kind of like Eminem."

ET's Kevin Frazier questioned who gave him this pass, and Dog replied: "The brothers...I had just gotten out of prison in 1979 after spending time, 18 months in Texas and it was probably three-fourths from the Black tribe.

"So that was a word that we used back and forth, as maybe a compliment. My pass expired for using it but no one told me that.

"To say a racist name doesn't qualify to make you a racist."

However, Frazier pushed back and said that uttering that particular word in your everyday language does, in fact, make you a racist.

The interviewer also brought up Bonnie's claims that Dog has used homophobic slurs in the past; something, again, that the TV star rejects.

While he claims to have three gay men on his staff and gay people in his family, the 68-year-old was warned by Frazier that 'proximity does not mean that you are not racist or homophobic'.

"Would I die for a gay man or a black man? I would lay down my life," Dog said in reply and also hit back against Bonnie's allegations.

"She's been fed what to say. I have three men on my staff that are gay. My daughter is gay, Baby Lyssa. I don't understand why anybody would ever say that."
