Fans are calling for Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless to replace Gina Carano on The Mandalorian after the former was fired for a bizarre social media rant.

Carano spectacularly destroyed her career after comparing the treatment Republicans in the US are facing to being Jewish in Nazi Germany.

The MMA athlete turned actor uploaded an image to her Instagram story with the caption: "Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbours... even by children.

"Because history is edited, most people today don't realise that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbours hate them simply for being Jews.

"How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?"

She also appeared to mock people concerned about the coronavirus pandemic, posting a picture of a person wearing multiple face masks with the caption 'Meanwhile: In California'.

The backlash was swift and prompted the hashtag #FireGinaCarano and #CancelDisneyPlus to spread across Twitter.

She has since been dropped from future projects, with a statement by Lucasfilm saying: "Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.

"Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."

Since her cancellation, fans have suggested that Lucy Lawless replace Carano in The Mandalorian, and honestly...it's a brilliant idea.

Lawless has most recently been starring as ex-homicide detective Alexa Crowe on Channel 10's crime TV series My Life is Murder.

Dungeons & Dragons podcasters SeveredSonsDnD said of the proposed replacement on Twitter: "Instead of #canceldisneyplus, can they just cast Lucy Lawless as Cara Dune and pretend it was her the whole time?"

Another asked: "What if Lucy Lawless took over as Cara Dune and we all just pretended she was always Cara Dune?"

Meanwhile, US politician Ted Cruz decided to throw in his thoughts that no one asked for and defended Carano. He declared she was 'instrumental in making Star Wars fun again.'

"Texan Gina Carano broke barriers in the Star Wars universe: not a princess, not a victim, not some emotionally tortured Jedi," he began.

"She played a woman who kicked ass & who girls looked up to. She was instrumental in making Star Wars fun again. Of course Disney canceled her," Cruz posted to Twitter, before being immediately dragged by other users.

The third season of The Mandalorian will likely premiere in 2022.
