Ever wished you could pat the heads of dogs on Ghosts of Tsushima? Hey, don't laugh, lots of people have - and now it seems they could be in luck.

When the video game was released around the world, people went nuts - gamers seemingly loved getting virtually transported to an open-world Japanese landscape where they could live out their favourite samurai fantasies.

But one of the best things about the game - apparently - was being able to pat all the foxes you came across.

That was all fun and games, but some gamers were annoyed they weren't able to interact with dogs in the same way - instead, the animals would tear you to shreds at any opportunity.

Well, the game developers have revealed you will soon be able to pat the heads of virtual canine pals to your heart's content when an update lands next week.

The game's Twitter account wrote: "Starting on October 16 with Ghosts of Tsushima version 1.1, you can equip the Charm of Canine Recruitment in New Game+ to pet dogs and turn them into allies, and you can also pet the spirit dogs in Ghosts of Tsushima: Legends."

Well, good news for some fans, I guess!

Thousands of people have liked the post on Twitter and hundreds have explained what the update will mean to them.

One person wrote: "That is awesome, I have Newfoundlands at home and every time I had to kill one of this guy's my heart broke a little. They look just like my little dudes."

Another added: "So I now I can turn the f***ers that gave me trouble as my allies...SWEET."

A third said: "This new update is off the hook. Everything I wanted will be granted. Can't wait as I've already platinumed and completed everything. Nice one Sucker Punch!"

PlayStation revealed this animal interaction was very popular when the game was released.

The gaming console company posted a tweet containing a number of stats about the game, such as the fact the foxes had been petted a whopping 8.8 million times in the first 10 days following its release.

Naturally, as the game has now been out for several months now, we can only assume that the figure is even higher and those little digital foxes have even more attention lavished upon them by animal-loving gamers.

Non-fox related stats also show that during the game's first 10 days there were 57.5 million duels, a whopping 810 years spent on horseback and 15.5 million photos taken.

If you're keen on more stats, there was also been 156.4 million standoffs, 28.1 million songs played on flute and 14.2 million haikus written.
