Harry Styles has come under fire for performing one of his signature live performance moves during his American tour.

It's been two years since the British singer has gone on tour and there's no doubt he was eager to whip out what has become known as The Whale.

Essentially, Styles drinks in a bit of water and then squirts it into the air, much like a whale.

While this wouldn't have raised many eyebrows before the beginning of last year, the act has come under scrutiny in light of there being an active pandemic in the US and around the world.

Harry took to the stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to open his Love On Tour on Sunday (September 5) and many were wondering whether he would bring out The Whale.

He did.

The singer chugged a bit of water and then sprayed it above himself.

While there were loads of cheers from the audience who had been gagging to see him perform the move, the reaction wasn't as friendly on social media.

One fan wrote: "I love you dearly. But it's Covid. Please stop taking a drink from water bottles then throwing it on people and doing the whale.

"That's...an incredible amount of germs. I know most of us would let you spit in our mouths but just maybe retire it for this tour? No hate."

Another added: "It's bad enough holding concerts RN when the Delta variant exists but why am I seeing clips of harry styles also SPITTING into the crowd?!

"Loudly crying face what the hell is his problem, him and his fans are so irresponsible."

A third said: "Harry Styles was spitting into the crowd during a PANDEMIC??? Every day I despise this man more and more."

While the water being spat out of Styles' mouth landed well clear of the nearest concertgoer, many have stated that water droplets can carry far into the air when it's sprayed out like that.

The singer's tour has mandatory coronavirus-related rules to ensure the concerts could be as safe as possible.

Concertgoers are forced to return a negative Covid-19 test before entry and wear face masks during the performance.

Judging from some of the photos of the crowds, many weren't sticking to that second regulation as they screamed and sang along with the artist.
