People watching the brand new trailer for House of Gucci have been absolutely shocked at one of the cast member's appearance.

Jared Leto is known for his long hair, short beard and piercing gaze, however many were taken aback when they saw his character in the dramatic biopic.

In the film he plays Paolo Gucci, who was the high-class brand's design chief and grandson of founder Guccio Gucci.

Leto had to ditch his signature personal style and opt for a moustache, semi-balding silver hair and a plumper face.

It wasn't until his name was flashed on the screen and alongside a poster for the movie did people realise it was the Academy Award winner.

One person wrote: "Movie magic getting a little scary now... Like holy s**t you have to REALLY know what his eyes look like to even be able to tell holy s**t this is nuts JARED LETO???"

Another added: "I want to applaud the makeup artist, stylist, Jared Leto, and others who took part on this project. He is indeed unrecognised."

A third said: "I just...OMG....just...amazing!"

Leto will be starring alongside Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Selma Hayek and Al Pacino for the film that is set to be released in November.

It's set in 1995 and 'depicts the events and aftermath of the murder of Maurizio Gucci (Driver), Italian businessman and head of the fashion house Gucci, by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga).

"Spanning three decades of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately murder, we see what a name means, what it's worth, and how far a family will go for control," the synopsis adds.

It's based on Sara Gay Forden's 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed.

The film has sparked discontent amongst members of the iconic Gucci family and some are worried it will bring their name into disrepute.

The real-life Patrizia Reggiani, who served 16 years behind bars for the murder plot, isn't happy her life will be portrayed on the big screen.

She told Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata earlier this year about her concerns with Gaga portraying her.

"I am rather annoyed at the fact that Lady Gaga is playing me in the new Ridley Scott film without having had the consideration and sensibility to come and meet me," the 72-year-old said.

"It is not an economic question. I won't get a cent from the film. It is a question of good sense and respect."

One of Maurizio's cousins, Patrizia Gucci, also told the Associated Press: "We are truly disappointed. I speak on behalf of the family.

"They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system. Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed."

That's despite Gucci president and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri confirming they had opened its archives and gave the movie studio 'total creative freedom'.

The film drops on November 24 and everyone will get to see the story behind the headlines.
