In the fallout from the release of Taylor Swift's re-recorded album Red (Taylor's Version), gossip has again kicked off about the boyfriends who potentially inspired her autobiographical tunes.

The 14-minute music video for 'All Too Well' dropped four days ago and has already racked up almost 35 million views on Youtube with the entire world (approximately) tipping Jake Gyllenhaal as the man behind the ballad.

But now another Hollywood chap has caught the ire of the Swifties: John Mayer.

The noted musician and open book about his exes, has started receiving death threats from Taylor fans on Instagram.

According to screenshots posted by Instagram account @deux.discusssions, a fan sent Mayer a message reading "f**k yourself you ugly b***h i hope you choke on something <3".

Now there are several ways this one could have played out. Most celebs would probably ignore the message, if they even saw it, or blast out a couple of screenshots online calling for mercy. But John decided to engage with the threat.

After the user sent him another message, 'answer me you b***h', Mayer responded.

"Hi Alondra, it's John. I've been getting so many messages like these the past couple of days. I decided to choose your message at random to reply to. You can feel free to screen shot, share in any way you like if you want," he said.

"I'm not upset, I just tend to have a curious mind and feel compelled to ask. Do you really hope that I die?"

Say what you will about John Mayer, and we probably all did around the 'sexual napalm' days, but that's a pretty classy move.

The fan responded in a voice note, according to US Weekly, where she reportedly apologised profusely and said her friend was a huge Taylor fan and had dared her to do it.

The pair went on to discuss the messages, with the user saying she never thought John would see the threat and him wishing her the best. So wholesome, we love to see it.

Taylor and John dated in December 2009 when Taylor was 19 years old and John was 32. By February 2010 the pair had broken up and Taylor's song 'Dear John' is largely assumed to be about him.

John addressed the song in a Rolling Stone interview in which he said: "It made me feel terrible.

"It was a really lousy thing to do. I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off guard."

He himself then allegedly wrote about their relationship in the song 'Paper Doll'.
