The Academy Award-winning film Joker is coming to Netflix Australia and New Zealand next month.

Two years after the incredible movie debuted and swept the Hollywood awards scene, audiences Down Under will be able to stream it until their heart's content.

Netflix ANZ has revealed Arthur Fleck's origin story will be hitting the streaming service on August 1.

We'll also be getting Man of Steel, The Matrix trilogy, Spy Kids and the sequel, the four Hunger Games films, Cats and Suicide Squad.

The official synopsis for Joker is listed as: "In 1981 Gotham City, a struggling, mentally ill comic battles to be seen. His life takes a dark, gut-wrenching turn after he lashes back at attackers."

It delves into how Arthur Peck (Phoenix) is trying to maintain his job as a performance clown while he attempts to make people laugh.

When he gets jumped by a bunch of people on a train, Peck shoots them dead and unearths a dark, sick and twisted evil from within.

It all culminates to when he's invited on his favourite TV show to do a spot of comedy. However, it turns deadly and Peck ends up inspiring the masses.

The film was such an interesting insight into the origins and psyche behind Batman's greatest foe.

Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoenix was so impressive in the film that he ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Actor, a BAFTA Award for Best Actor, a Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

Now you'll get to soak up every single second of it when it lands on Netflix next month.

We're also waiting with bated breath to see what happens with the highly anticipated and rumoured Joker sequel.

An article in The Hollywood Reporter back in May detailed the most powerful lawyers in Tinseltown. It revealed a follow-up to the Academy Award winning film is apparently definitely in the works.

It added that Todd Phillips, who was director of the first film, has been brought on to co-write the script for the sequel.

While it was one of the biggest mentions that a sequel is indeed in development, there hasn't been an official confirmation from Warner Bros. that it's going ahead.

ComicBook.com notes that back in 2019 an announcement was made that we were getting a sequel and then it was quickly retracted. So, we'll have to wait and see.
