Keanu Reeves says John Constantine would be on top of his list of characters he'd love to revisit.

The actor's character in Constantine managed to exorcise people and travel between Earth and Hell as he sought salvation from eternal damnation for a suicide attempt in his youth.

The movie failed to attracted big bucks at the box office and it hasn't gone down as Reeves' most beloved roles like Neo or John Wick.

Despite this, star said he would love to go back to the character and see what else lurks in his story.

Speaking to Stephen Colbert to promote The Matrix Resurrections, the actor was asked if there were any other movies in his filmography he wants to see rebooted.

"I would love to be John Constantine again," he said on the TV talk show. "I've tried. I would love to."

The difficulty in getting a sequel green lit is down to the film rights and who owns what.

Director Francis Lawrence told /Film last year that he had spoken to Reeves and producer Akiva Goldsman about doing another film.

"I think we all wanted to do it. It was successful enough. We wanted to make a responsible, more R-rated movie," Lawrence said.

"What I really liked about the first one was it was a really personal story, so I thought it'd be a mistake to get caught up in the supernatural gobblygook.

"We have been talking about it recently. It's always stuck with all of us because we all love the movie, and especially realising there's a real cult following for this movie, it'd be fun to make. Keanu, Akiva, and I have actually talked about it."

The director explained that Constantine is part of Vertigo, which is a part of the DC universe. So, there are issues with working out who to approach to get the green light for the sequel.

Lawrence added that it hasn't been a lack of trying on their part.

"We all investigated it, but I think it's kind of crazy when you have Keanu, who would love to do another Constantine, and us wanting to do another Constantine, and people are like, 'Uh, no, we got other plans'. We'll see what happens," he said.

There were rumblings late last year that a sequel could indeed be in the works.

Peter Stormare, who starred in the movie alongside Keanu Reeves as Lucifer, claimed via an Instagram post: "Sequel in the works."

Warner Bros. never confirmed a sequel was happening and we've been in limbo ever since.
