The first part of Lucifer's fifth season will be dropping on Netflix Australia today (August 21).

The series has garnered loads of fans from around the world so dedicated their campaign literally brought the show back from the dead.

The fifth season is expected to pick up from the ending of the fourth where Tom Ellis' character, Satan, returns from hell after trying to stop a demon rebellion.

For those who haven't seen it, Lucifer is a fantasy-drama that centres on Lucifer Morningstar, or the Devil, who decides to leave the balmy and temperate stylings of Hell and moves to Los Angeles to run a nightclub (as you do).

The sexy twist is that he uses his powers of persuasion to become a consultant for the LAPD.

We'll be getting eight devilish episodes in this first part, which are released today, and another eight when part two drops (that release date hasn't been announced).

Everyone thought season five was going to be the show's last, however it was renewed for a sixth, which promises to address the Black Lives Matter movement.

The show originally aired on Fox, but it was cancelled after just three seasons. That's when Netflix swooped it up and took it off Fox's hands, which came as great news to loyal Lucifer heads.

After the news broke, Ildy Modrovich and fellow producer Joe Henderson thanked the streaming site and the show's fans for giving them another chance to end the series as they had wanted.

They said: "We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms. Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!"

Some fans claimed season five would be Ellis' last hurrah as the titular character, with one site even claiming he was going to be replaced by Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder for a sixth season.

However, this was quickly quashed by Modrovich, who shared a tweet, saying: "Bwahahahaha!!!!"

And with Ellis already signed up for the sixth and final season, we think he's safe.

Speaking to The Guardian, Ellis admitted he had come to terms with the fifth series being his last, until he was called and asked to do another.

He said: "I'd planned to spend this season in my own grieving process. And then, right towards the end, literally as we'd already devised how we would end our show, we had a call from Netflix saying: 'Would you like to go another season?'"

"I know we're the Lazarus of TV shows, but this is definitely going to be the final season."
