Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin turned 40 on Wednesday (26 August), causing many fans to react with shock and surprise.

Culkin wrote to his fans on Twitter: "Hey guys, wanna feel old? I'm 40. You're welcome."

He added: "It's my gift to the world: I make people feel old. I'm no longer a kid, that's my job.

"Since I'm 40 I think it's about time to start my midlife crisis. I'm thinking of picking up surfing. Do you all have any suggestions? Do any of you have photoshop skill? Can you put my head on a surfer so I can get an idea of how cool I'd look?"

It's hard to believe the cherubic-faced star that graced our screens back in 1990 in the first Home Alone movie is now 40 years old.

Responding to the social media post, fans say they certainly feel like time has slipped away from them.

One bloke replied, saying: "Damn it Macaulay. I'm only 23 I don't wanna feel old. Yet now I do."

Another added: "F*** when did that happen."

A third wrote: "Nooooooooo! And I am soon to become a grandmother. How older could I possibly feel? Damn you Culkin! Also Happy Birthday."

Even though Culkin is well remembered for his role in Home Alone, he hasn't completely hung up his acting boosts. He was recently cast in the 10th season of American Horror Story and fans were very excited.

In a break from the tradition of keeping things strictly under wraps, the show's creator Ryan Murphy revealed one racy detail to the actor before he signed up.

Speaking to E! News, the 54-year-old said: "I have always loved Macaulay Culkin's work.

"I loved everything that he's done, I love the stuff he did in Home Alone, I also loved the sort of the older, more recent stuff that he did. And he hasn't worked in a while.

"So, I have this very, very great insane part. And I asked to speak to him on the phone and he said OK.

"[When] I cast, I never let people read things, usually. I said, 'OK, here's the pitch.' And I told them the character and I told him he has crazy, erotic sex with Kathy Bates and does other things. And he paused and he goes, 'This sounds like the role I was born to play.' So, he signed up right then and there."

But while Murphy assures fans that all the scripts are written and ready to go, with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic it's not clear when production will start. However, Murphy says he hopes it is soon as he can't wait to work with Culkin.
