Netflix has announced a new fictional series about the legendary Formula 1 racer Ayrton Senna.

The streaming service will explore the man's life over eight wild episodes and is expected to launch in 2022.

The Brazilian racer had 41 wins, 65 poles and the Formula One World Drivers' Championship in 1988, 1990 and 1991 during his illustrious career, and is widely regarded as one of the best the sport has ever seen.

He was famously killed in an accident while leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Netflix is hoping the miniseries will take you behind the glitz and glamour of the racer's life and allow audiences to 'explore the personality and family relationships' of Beco or Becão, which was Senna's affectionate nicknames among friends and family.

The streaming service has given a rundown of what we can expect and it sounds like it will be very comprehensive.

"The starting point will be Ayrton's career debut, when he moves to England in order to compete on the F1600," the synopsis says.

"His overcoming trajectory, mismatches, joy, sadness, everything will be there while the show portrays the man behind the myth. The story culminates in the tragic accident in Imola, Italy, during the Grand Prix of San Marino."

The limited Netflix series has the blessing of Senna's family, who are thrilled to see the racer's legacy preserved and immortalised.

Ayrton's sister, Viviane, released a statement, saying: "It is very special to be able to announce that we will tell the story that only a few people know about him.

"The Senna family is committed in making this project something totally unique and unprecedented. And no one better than Netflix, that has a global reach, to be our partner."

There will be filming locations around the world, including a lot in his home city of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Maria Angela de Jesus, director of original international productions at Netflix in Brazil, hopes it will showcase one of the country's most celebrated sportsmen.

"Senna started his journey in São Paulo and conquered the world, we are honoured to take his inspiring journey to all his fans, wherever they are. Ayrton Senna has a legacy that spans generations and boundaries and Netflix is proud to take this new look at the man behind the driver to subscribers in more than 190 countries," she said.

All eyes will be on 2022 when we'll be able to feast our ears and eyes on the project.
