Nicolas Cage Says He Will 'Never' Retire From Acting

Nicolas Cage has boldly stated that he never wants to retire from acting.

The legendary performer has been dazzling us on the big and small screen as far back as 1981 and it looks like he's not slowing down any time soon.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor explained that he's happiest when he's focusing on and preparing for a role.

So, it makes sense to never retire to ensure he stays happy for the rest of his days.

"That can't happen," Cage said when asked about retirement.

"To do what I do in cinema has been like a guardian angel for me, and I need it. I'm healthier when I'm working, I need a positive place to express my life experience, and filmmaking has given me that.

"So I'm never going to retire. Where are we now, 117 movies?

"What's funny is, my argument with people who go, 'You work too much,' was 'I like working, and it's healthy, I'm happy when I'm working, and by the way, guys like Cagney and Bogart, they were doing hundreds of movies'."

While he's happy to make as many movies as his body can handle, it appears his brain can't handle watching them when they're done.

Cage is currently making a film where he's playing a 'highly-neurotic, anxiety-ridden version' of himself - but he's refusing to watch it, despite being told it's a 'good movie'.

Cage is starring alongside the likes of Pedro Pascal, Sharon Horgan, Tiffany Haddish and Neil Patrick Harris for the action-comedy called The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

The plot follows Cage as he begrudgingly accepts an invite to attend a birthday party of Mexican billionaire super fan and notorious drug lord Javi (Pascal), who forces Cage to recreate some of his most iconic characters in order to save his kidnapped wife and daughter.

Speaking to Collider, he said: "I'm never going to see that movie.

"I'm told it's a good movie. My manager, Mike Nilon, who is also a producer on it, looked at it. He was very happy. I'm told the audience loved the movie.

"But it's just too much of a whacked-out trip for me to go to a movie theater and watch me play Tom Gormican's highly-neurotic, anxiety-ridden version of me."

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is due for release in April 2022.
