After months of speculation, the rumours are finally true: an open world Harry Potter role playing game has been announced.

Hogwarts Legacy will allow gamers to play as a witch or wizard (sadly you can't play as The Boy Who Lived) as they learn all about the world of magic.

In the game, you'll attend the Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learn spells, and make choices that can affect the world around them.

The game is expected to drop next year and will be compatible for all next-generation consoles. Who knew Harry Potter was going to save us from the year 2020?

The official description for the game reads: "Experience a new story set at Hogwarts in the 1800s. Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. Make allies, battle Dark wizards, and decide the fate of the wizarding world."

Details on exactly what the game will specifically entail are still relatively thin right now, but it certainly looks like the in-depth RPG we've been hearing about for around a year now.

Previous rumours suggested that the RPG will support a basic character customisation system, and the ability to choose between pureblood, half-blood, or muggle-born.

Essentially, we're getting Grand Theft Auto but for the wizarding world.

There are rumours that the ability to choose your bloodline will have certain gameplay ramifications. What we do know is that the Harry Potter RPG is real, and it looks fantastic.

Alleged footage of the magical adventure first surfaced back in 2018. Publisher Warner Bros. never acknowledged the title of the game, however sources revealed only just this year that the footage was the real deal.

A report from Bloomberg revealed that author and creator of the Potter universe, J.K Rowling, has had very little direct involvement with the project.

This will likely come as a relief to many, given the author's repeated trans-exclusionary stances on Twitter. The developers who spoke to Bloomberg explained that her comments in regards to the transgender community had been a source of great stress for the team over the last few months

It's not entirely clear when Hogwarts Legacy will drop beyond a vague 2021 release window, but it looks like this'll be a next-gen only title for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles.

Until then, we can just revel in the trailer and get very excited about this one.
