Pedro Pascal has been cast as Joel in the forthcoming TV adaptation of video game The Last of Us.

Star of The Mandalorian, Pascal will join Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey, who has been hired to play Ellie.

The game, which was released in 2013, follows a young girl called Ellie as she forms a relationship with hardened doomsday survivor Joel to get out of the dangerous 'quarantine zone' in a post-apocalyptic United States.

Joel, who knows a thing or two about keeping himself alive, must get Ellie outside the zone because it is thought that she might hold the key to a cure for a pandemic that has destroyed the country.

Naughty Dog

This series will be concerned with the events of the first game, but there could be more in the works after the release of the long-awaited sequel The Last of Us Part II in May last year.

There were rumours that Oscar-winning actor and True Detective star Mahershala Ali was going to play Joel, however The Hollywood Reporter claims that was fake.

The TV adaptation is being developed by Craig Mazin, who brought us the incredible Chernobyl HBO series.

Mazin has enlisted the help of video game director Neil Druckmann to bring his vision for the series to life.

He is thought to be a huge fan of the video game, which will obviously help.

Mazin said: "Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus.

"Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil."
