Ridley Scott appears to be pushing ahead with making his sequel to Gladiator.

The Academy Award-winning film is regularly regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time and was wrapped up in a pretty nice bow at the end.

However, the director has long pushed for a follow-up and it seems like it's finally getting off the ground.

Speaking to Empire, Scott said he's currently busy with his next film, Kitbag, which will star Joaquin Pheonix (who was also in Gladiator) and Jodie Comer and will track the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Once he's finished with that, it looks like it will be a one-way ticket back to Ancient Rome.

"I'm already having [the next] Gladiator written now," he said to the entertainment publication. "So when I've done Napoleon, Gladiator will be ready to go."

Russell Crowe has already indicated he's keen to be a part of the movie (even though his character died in the original film), as long as there's a decent way to revive his character.

He told E! News last year: "I keep being like this sort of party pooper when I say, I just wanted to remind you I died in the first one. So, I don't really know. This far away, could we play with that? We could... "

Adding: "I can tell you those conversations have been going on since the last day of shooting the last one and there's been a lot of different ideas of approaching things."

Producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald revealed back in 2019 that the sequel is expected to be set 25 years after the original.

There have been rumours for some time now claiming the plot of the new movie will centre on Lucius, son of Lucilla (played by Spencer Treat Clark in the original) and nephew of Commodus (Joacquin Pheonix) - which could make sense if the second instalment leaps forward two decades and presents us with a new generation of characters.

Considering the original film came out in 2000, the release of the sequel could line up perfectly with Parkes' and MacDonald's vision.

Hell, you could even get Spencer Treat Clark to play his older self because he'll be the exact age they need. No need for fancy CGI or de-ageing technology.

Ridley Scott has been talking about a Gladiator sequel for years and we've never had something as concrete as what he's most recently said so stay tuned.
