Robert Irwin may have lost his dad when he was just three years old but the budding wildlife photographer is ensuring that the fond memories he has of the late croc hunter are being kept alive.

The 17-year-old delighted fans when he recreated an old photo of him and his dad Steve that showcased their special bond.

Taking to Instagram, the teen posted the sweet snap of himself as a toddler gleefully sitting on Steve's red motorbike while he gripped the handlebars.

"I have so many memories of Dad's old motorbike - hanging on to the front with Bindi as we'd ride around the zoo with Dad. And now after being in the shed for a few years, it's all fixed up and running again," Robert captioned the image.

"It's so special to be riding it after all this time!"

The heartwarming image was followed by a recent image of the young wildlife conservationist all grown up on the very same bike, with both photographs taken on the grounds of Australia Zoo, with Robert adding that he had recently fixed up his late dad's bike.

Followers were quick to gush over the special snaps, with many saying that Steve would be so proud of his youngest child.

One wrote: "I can't even begin to think how big your dad's smile is right now."

Another added: "Like many of us, I grew up watching your father on TV and it's amazing that you decided to follow in his footsteps but by carving your own path. Much respect for you."

A third said: "We're all living vicariously through your wonderful memories of your father Robert. You are like him in so many ways."

It's not the first time fans of the Irwin family have marvelled over the father and son's uncanny resemblance.

In January, Robert posted a nail-biting clip of himself feeding a crocodile at Australia Zoo - and you'd be forgiven for mistaking the youngster for his famous dad back in the day.

"Bluey the croc putting on a big strike!" Robert captioned the post.

"There's nothing quite like getting to experience the power of these modern-day dinosaurs, it's such a privilege!"

Immediately, followers flooded the comments with messages drawing comparisons between Robert and Steve.

One said: "You look so much like your dad right there!!! Nice croc feeding!"

Another added: "So cool seeing you do what your dad was so passionate about!!"

As they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
