Fans of our favourite crime-fighting duo, Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler, are in for a major treat with the news that the duo are set to reunite in a new Law & Order spinoff series.

On Monday, Mariska Hargitay shared some behind-the-scenes snaps alongside her former SVU co-star, Christopher Meloni, for their latest project Law & Order: Organized Crime.

"It's all happening," Hargitay captioned the post that showed the pair in a cemetery, along with directors chairs bearing their characters' names.

Fans are already losing it over the duo coming back together, with one posting to Twitter: "When we finally get this Benson and Stabler reunion episode of SVU I think my brain might combust from joy."

Another added: "I'm just trying to comprehend all of this right now. How is this real? How are Benson & Stabler actually together again after 10 years? Still looking so natural together? I'm just- I NEED SEVERAL MOMENTS."

The pair earned a dedicated fanbase after their longtime roles on SVU before Meloni left the series for good back in 2011.

Hargitay's character later went on to become Captain of the Special Victims Unit.

Rumours the pair were finally going to reunite went into overdrive last year when Meloni suggested it could happen on the new show.

Speaking of the reunion to the NY Post last year, the actor who played Elliot Stabler said: "It just has to be. Benson and Stabler are inextricably linked, locked and connected.

"How my character left was really unsatisfying, I think."

Stabler left the Special Victims Unit under the guise that he was retiring from the force. His final episode, titled 'Smoked', was a doozy as well, which left the squad room in tatters.

The format could be very different to previous Law & Order series and plotlines could be drawn out over several episodes rather than the crime, investigation and criminal trial all happening in one.

The network had previously unveiled the official synopsis for the programme and it sounds incredible.

"The city and police department have changed dramatically in the decade he's been away, and he must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning," the synopsis read.

"Throughout the series, we will follow Stabler's journey to find absolution and rebuild his life, while leading a new elite task force that is taking apart the city's most powerful criminal syndicates one by one."

Meloni promised that his character's departure from SVU will be explored in Organised Crime.

He added: "I think there is truly and deeply a worthwhile, inherent drama in exploring that relationship and the complexity of how Stabler left - the unresolved emotions both characters feel and how the fans feel."

Law & Order: Organized Crime is slated to begin airing sometime in spring 2021.
