Twihards will be rejoicing today as Stephenie Meyer releases her highly anticipated followup to the 2005 saga.

Midnight Sun will tell the same story we saw in Twilight, however it will be from Edward Cullen's perspective.

Meyer announced in May that she would be giving fans another slice of the goings on in Forks, Washington and people went wild.

The 46-year-old thought long and hard about releasing the book amid the current Covid-19 pandemic, but realised it would give readers something to look forward to in these bleak times.

She said: "It feels strange to be making this announcement when the world is suffering through a pandemic, and no one really knows what's next. I thought seriously about delaying this announcement until things were back to normal; however, that felt wrong, considering how long those who are eager for this book have already waited.

"I know how much I personally need distractions right now, how much I need something to look forward to, and most of all, how much I need more books to read. So, I hope this book gives my readers a little pleasure to anticipate and, after it arrives, a chance to live in an imaginary world for a while.

The original vampire-themed fantasy romance saga was comprised of four books, released annually between 2005 and 2008, and they were a huge international hit, selling more than 100 million copies.

The series was subsequently brought to the big screen, with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner in the lead roles.

A new Twilight book is coming out in August.

But we only got to see how the drama unfolded from the eyes of Bella. Now it's Edward's turn.

The synopsis for Midnight Sun reads: "When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, readers can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun.

"This unforgettable tale, as told through Edward's eyes, takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most intriguing and unnerving event he has experienced in his many years as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward's past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life."

Meyer originally planned to have the book published after the 2008 novel of Breaking Dawn, however it took her longer than expected to finish it.

After 12 long years, it's here.
