Aussie TV Icon Bert Newton Has Leg Amputated After Getting Toe Infection

Australian television icon Bert Newton has had his leg amputated after getting a toe infection.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford revealed to 2GB Radio this morning (May 10) that the 82-year-old had been suffering from a mystery illness since December.

"The way they see it, Bert had a choice. He wants to stick around, he loves his wife, his kids, his grandkids he just adores, so he wants to be around for as long as possible to enjoy that," Ford said.

"But life going to be quite different from now on."

The reporter added that it was a 'life or death' scenario and Newton was forced to make the tough decision to lop off the leg.

"Bert was given the ultimatum: You only have a couple of months to live, but if you have this operation and we amputate your leg you could have many years ahead." Ford later told 3AW Radio.

"So that was the choice and Bert obviously chose to stick around."

Doctors and specialists couldn't seem to overcome the infection that started in his lower extremity.

It will be a massive change for the icon. He and his wife of 47 years, Patti, will have to make some adjustments.

"It's a big decision for anyone to make, but it's also a practical thing, because they live in a two-storey place with the bedrooms and the bathrooms upstairs, so they're now having to convert the house downstairs because Patti doesn't want him to go into a nursing home," Ford said.

Peter said he had spoken with Bert and his family and they don't want this to be a 'sad' story.

"They said, 'We had a choice. Other people don't have a choice. Bert wants to keep on living, because he adores Patti, his children and his grandkids, and he wants to have as much time as he can with them'."

The legendary entertainer had to undergo quadruple heart bypass surgery back in 2012 and was hospitalised with pneumonia the year before.

Patti shared a picture of Bert in a hospital cap and gown last year and revealed the 82-year-old was okay and has a 'lot of living to do'.
